Easter Bunny

Finally caught him! Yup, that’s the easter bunny all right. I’m sure it’s the same dude that plants all those eggs.

HP5+, EI400.

Spring Magnolias

Surprise! C-41 (specifically, Fuji Pro 160S), from the Diacord L. Yes, this one’s really from the Diacord L.

The surprise is that I managed to develop this in my basement. This was the second tank that went through the process; the count is now up to… lessee… 3 rolls of 35mm and 4 rolls of 120. The last roll is still drying.

I’ve spent several weeks trying to find an aquarium heater that I could modify to keep water at 102 degrees (the recommended temperature for the Teten …[more]

Hurry

So, you may recall my saying recently that another camera was on the way. That was a 1958 Ricoh Diacord L (not to be confused with the Diacord G, which I’ve CLA’d, but it has fungus between the rear lens elements – you can judge whether or not that’s a significant detriment, as almost all of the shots I posted over the past two weeks came from that camera). After a weekend of disassembling the shutter, cleaning all of the parts, re-lubricating and reassembly, accidentally spilling naptha back …[more]

Friends 1

Okay, I think I’m winding down on the posts from St. Patty’s in Jim Thorpe. Before I finish, I have a set of good “Friends” shots that I want to post.

Ilford Delta 3200, EI 1600.

Smokin’ and Drinkin’

Ilford HP5+, EI800. On the Diacord G, whose shutter froze on me today. I think I’ve unstuck it – something related to the flash select lever (M/X) is binding, but it’s okay as long as I keep the lever on X. Which is where I want it, but it’s not where it wants to stay…

88th

Shot on Ilford HP5, EI 800, at the Jim Thorpe St. Patty’s Day parade. I’ll have a few more shots of these guys. The insignia on this guy’s backpack really struck me as powerful in B&W – they even offered to turn around and pose, and I turned ’em down.

But back to my quick comment yesterday: I’ve been contemplating the question “Is film ‘better’ than digital?”

Since I started shooting film, I hear this a lot. “Film is so much
better than digital!” says the die …[more]

Animated

Finally – some new material! And in droves. Last weekend was the annual St. Patty’s parade in Jim Thorpe, PA. This year I shot both film and digital, and have some confirmation of commonly held beliefs about shooting the two. And a bit o refutation as well. Look for it tomorrow. 🙂

Monsoon Season

From Drexel’s campus yesterday morning. Seems like Monsoon Season is upon us in Philadelphia – an insane deluge is coming down right now, accompanied with hellacious winds. Our road and driveway once again form Lake Randall. This street shot from yesterday morning, taken with the Diacord G just hours before the shutter release froze up on me, seems quite apropos.

Shot on HP5, EI 400.

And yes, the Diacord G has been disassembled, more thoroughly CLA’d, and is back in operationa …[more]

Signs of Life

Fighting an awful cold, but it gave me a chance to snap this one in our back yard today. Not only were the snow drops poppin’, but the Diacord G is alive and kickin’! Hellooooo 1958!

Shot on Acros 100. While I’m partial to HP5 at the moment, I do have a few rolls of 100-speed film kicking around for portraiture. Last night Jake and I set up some backdrops and lights (it’s strange to see PocketWizards firing strobes from a 1958 hot shoe!) and shot some portraits of guests visiting us f …[more]
