Travelers
Still working on framing with this camera; it’s a 1947 Bessa 66, and I find it more difficult to frame close-up shots than I do with the 1938 version. Hand-held @ ~1/25th sec, f/11, Ilford HP5+.
Pictured are three travelers on their way to New Orleans. I believe the woman on the right is Jennifer, and the dog is Venus. Sadly, I had no notebook at hand and it was raining at the time (so the electronics didn’t come out to assist me)…
I saw them there too. Briefly wished I had a camera, then was glad I didn’t because I was happy to get in out of the rain. I can understand why you didn’t want to take the time to adjust aperture and shutter speed…
Looks like an image from the 1960s, a couple of hippies headed for San Francisco. Very nice.
I saw them too!
The fact that there is general blur in the image does not bother me. Even if you had adjusted the aperture and shutter speed to freeze the people, the dog would likely be blurry. The fact that they all seem a bit blurry simply adds to the quick grab sense that I have for this image. The smile on the woman holding the dog with the serious look from the woman who is obviously propogating their message is wonderful and is what makes the image for me. The postures of these women add immensely to the image as well.
Keep it up, and shoot more film.
Robin
Thanks for the detail, Robin! Much appreciated.
Steve, pretty much what I envisioned!
Mark, the exposure is somewhat deliberate; I didn’t have a tape measure to figure out how far away they were, and my guesses have varying accuracy at the near end… so I chose to shoot at f/11 to be sure I nailed the focus at the expense of some blur. I hoped it would come out to good effect (as I think it did). The only bit that bothers me about this shot is the framing; I had expected more space on the right. I’ll have to build a jig for this camera to re-align the viewfinder with the taking lens at something close to 6 feet…
